Mapping Metaphor with the Historical Thesaurus
collection Wendy Anderson, Ellen Bramwell, Carole Hough (2015) · source
A database of metaphorical connections between semantic domains in English, built from the Historical Thesaurus of English at the University of Glasgow. Maps systematic links between ~400 semantic categories, documenting how vocabulary transfers between domains across the full history of English from Old English to the present. Provides historical depth that complements the synchronic analysis of Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory.
