Reproduction
Roles: parent, conception, gestation, labor, offspring, fertility, barrenness
The biological process by which organisms produce new individuals. In its prototypical human form, this includes conception (the union of genetic material), gestation (the period of internal development), labor (the effortful process of delivery), and the emergence of offspring that carry traits of the parent yet exist independently. Fertility and barrenness mark the presence or absence of reproductive capacity. As a source domain, reproduction provides rich structure for metaphors of creation, innovation, and intellectual production.
