Problem-Solving
Roles: problem, solver, solution, constraint, heuristic, decomposition, approximation
The general cognitive activity of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues. As a source domain, problem-solving foregrounds the existence of a goal state, obstacles between the current state and the goal, and strategies for navigating those obstacles. The frame imports spatial metaphors (searching a solution space, exploring possibilities) and mechanical ones (levers, tools, mechanisms).
