Music
Roles: harmony, melody, rhythm, consonance, dissonance, key, tempo, instrument, performer, ensemble, tuning
The production and perception of organized sound. As a source domain for metaphor, music supplies models of harmony (parts fitting together), rhythm (recurring temporal patterns), resonance (sympathetic vibration), and tuning (precise calibration). Its metaphorical power comes from the fact that music is both rigorously structural — governed by mathematical ratios of frequency — and deeply felt as embodied experience. When we say people are “in harmony” or “in tune,” we borrow not just an aesthetic image but an implicit physics of compatible vibration.
