Compulsive Ingestion

Roles: substance, user, craving, dose, tolerance, withdrawal, bingeing, relapse, recovery, dependence

The pattern of compulsive substance use: a person ingests a substance, develops tolerance (needing more for the same effect), experiences craving and withdrawal when deprived, and cycles through bingeing and relapse. Distinct from food-and-cooking in that the central logic is loss of control and escalating dependence rather than nourishment or preparation. The frame draws on both pharmacological addiction and behavioral compulsion, and provides the structural vocabulary (hooked, fix, cold turkey, clean) that English extends to any behavior perceived as out of control.
