Animal Training
Roles: trainer, trainee, reward, punishment, signal, command, obedience, generalization, leash, enclosure
The deliberate shaping of animal behavior through systematic reward and punishment. Distinguished from animal husbandry (herd management, breeding, pasture) by its focus on behavioral compliance in individual animals. Distinguished from animal behavior (wild instinct, predation, territory) by the explicit presence of a human trainer who designs the conditioning regime. The trainer-trainee relationship is asymmetric: the trainer controls the reward signal, sets the criteria for success, and decides when the animal has learned. The animal has no access to the trainer’s reasons — it learns to associate actions with outcomes without understanding the goal. As a source domain, animal training maps onto any system where behavior is shaped through feedback without shared understanding of purpose.
