In physics, the term describes points of infinite density (black holes) or the initial state of the universe (the Big Bang), where known laws of physics cease to apply. When Vernor Vinge borrowed this term in 1993 to describe a hypothetical moment when machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence and triggers an irreversible transformation of civilization, he was making a specific structural claim about the future: not just that things will change, but that they will change in a way that makes the future fundamentally unpredictable from this side of the threshold.

That came from Vernor Vinge, a computer scientist and science-fiction author, in his 1993 NASA lecture “The Coming Technological Singularity,” where he explicitly borrowed the term from mathematics and physics to describe a point beyond which extrapolation fails. Ray Kurzweil popularized the concept with The Singularity Is Near (2005), adding a specific timeline (around 2045) and a techno-optimistic framing (the singularity as transcendence rather than catastrophe).
