Transfers

An intern is eager, fast, sometimes surprisingly capable, but fundamentally unsupervised-dangerous. The intern frame emerged organically in developer communities as a way to calibrate expectations for LLM coding assistants: it produces work product quickly, but everything must be reviewed before it ships.

Origin Story

The intern metaphor for AI emerged in developer communities on Twitter, Hacker News, and Reddit in 2023, shortly after ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot became widely used. It arose as a corrective to two competing frames: the “tool” frame (which understated AI’s generative capacity) and the “superintelligence” frame (which overstated AI’s reliability).

The intern frame filled a gap by providing a social role that everyone in a professional context understood: an entity that is genuinely helpful, genuinely unreliable, and genuinely requiring supervision. Its strength is that it maps onto an existing management practice — reviewing intern work — that most professionals already know how to do.

Unlike “tool” or “copilot,” the intern frame was not a corporate branding choice. It emerged from practitioners’ lived experience and spread because it accurately described the workflow that produced good results: assign, review, correct, repeat.
